Women of the Bible

On Sunday morning, April 14, 2011 all who attended the 9 a.m. service entered into a time warp as they stepped through the doorway of the sanctuary and into the pages of the Bible. Our travel guides were Sarah (Laura Barrett), Rebekah (JoAnn Visotsky), Ruth (Shari Patchin), Mary of Bethany (Suzanne Toaz), Mary the Mother of Jesus (Judy English), Hannah (Bev Fitch), and Queen Esther (Gay Dimock) - Women who lived and obeyed God’s commands and who exemplified His glory through their faithfulness. Each of them captivated the audience with their ‘personal story.’Reading the Bible is a great thing but to seeing it come alive can be even more powerful. The ladies who present “The Women of The Bible” do a wonderful job teaching us about their Biblical era and answering God’s call. Thank you to the actors and to narrators Ann Burzyck and Sharon Garrison for sharing the Women of the Bible with us and with other  groups throughout the state of Michigan. Congratulations on over 125 performances!

The mission of the Women of the Bible is “To bring the Word of God to all who will listen, through our dramatizations of women in the Bible.”

Back in October 2001 the first presentation was given at our church; the performance touched many in the audience and the ladies were encouraged to take the program on the road. They have done just that, giving about a dozen performances annually.

In 2010 the group gave thirteen performances during their four-month season traveling between Cheboygan & Riverview, Grand Haven & Oscoda and points between. This year the group reached a new milestone of giving a total of 120 performances! The women have presented to over 14,000 audience attendees since they began.  The performances are not about ‘how many’ are in the audience. They are about presenting the Word of God in a way that can bridge Biblical stories to contemporary struggles. How joyful it has been for the women to hear after a presentation how the message truly connected with audience members! This has been expressed by young and old, women and men. Enacting God’s Word is a unique way to breathe life into stories that might not otherwise reach some of the audience attendees. That is what keeps the ladies motivated to give their time and talent for this ministry.

A ‘love offering’ is taken at the conclusion of each performance.  Proceeds are donated to ministries and organizations that support women and children. Thousands of dollars have been distributed to several ministries locally and globally through the love offerings.

The Women of the Bible members are honored to spread the Word of God through this ministry as a mission of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church of the North.

Respectfully submitted,
